Management of Acute Kidney Injury
Acute Kidney Disease (AKD) or Injury is when there is sudden worsening of kidney function within hours to days. This is important to diagnose quickly as it causes waste products and fluid to build up in the body.
Causes of Acute Kidney Disease
Causes can include
- Poor blood flow to the kidneys from low blood pressure.
- Fluid loss (such as from diarrhea or vomiting), or because of other organ diseases (such as the heart or liver).
- Obstruction to the urinary flow such as from kidney stones or prostate disease.
- Direct damage to the kidney itself.
- Diseases of the arteries of the kidneys.
- Automimmune diseases affecting the kidneys.
- Severe infection in the body.
Symptoms
- Swelling.
- Nausea/vomiting.
- Fatigue – especially as the kidney failure becomes more severe.
- Reduced urine output.
- Fluid retention.
- Chest pain.
Treatment
- The major part of treatment of Acute Kidney Injury is the treatment of the underlying cause, such as giving fluid or relieving an obstruction. It is very important to evaluate for complications of acute kidney injury including fluid overload and electrolyte changes that may require specific medications or, in severe cases, dialysis.
